“And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7).  Christ Jesus, the King of kings, was born of a virgin and laid in a manger.  Here is royalty in a stable.  Isaiah gives a glowing picture of this One who was born in such a lowly place: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6.). 
     Oh, the greatness of this little One born in a stable and laid in a manger!  Isaiah said, “His name shall be called Wonderful.” And surely He is the world’s great wonder. No one else has ever approached Him.  He is in a class all by Himself.  No man ever spoke as did Jesus. “The common people heard him gladly,” but His teachings were so profound that no philosopher has ever sounded their depths.  He never wrote a sermon;  He never published a book;  He never founded a college; yet His teachings have endured for almost two thousand years.  Only the great,  infinite God should conceive such a stupendous plan! 
     Jesus, born of a virgin, was born in a stable and laid in a manger.  I do not believe the plan was without purpose - the Bible reveals that God does nothing foolishly. The God of the heavens makes no mistakes!  The scene of the stable gives encouragement to the lowliest to come to Christ.  We are invited to come “without money and without price” (Isaiah 55:1).  That reminds us of the verse in II Corinthians 8:9, “For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.” 
     The scene of the stable gives humility to the proud.  Salvation does not come to anyone unless he bows down before God in repentance and faith.  The self-righteous will never come unto salvation unless there is a forsaking of that self-righteous spirit.  Now give thought to this manger scene-think about the royalty in the stable. 
                                                             The Compassion of God
     Do not try to explain the love of God - just receive it. I can’t explain the love of a mother for a wayward son, but there it is.  Nor can I understand God’s love, but I can certainly receive it.  As you look at the scene in the stable, then you are reminded that God was working.  The birth of Christ, the life of Christ, the death of Christ can be explained in only one way - the love of God!  From the cradle to the cross, just one word explains it all, and that word is love.  When Jesus came into the world, He revealed the love of God.  He showed to us the compassion of the eternal God for the worst of sinners.  Who can measure it?  Who can fathom it? 
     What was the reason for our Saviour’s coming?  What was the purpose of God in sending His Son?  The answer is, He was Born to Be Our Saviour! 
Jesus came to take away sin!  In John 3:5 we read, “And ye know that He was manifested to take away our sins; and in Him is no sin.”  This means pardon for the past.  For the man who suffers under the oppression of a guilty conscience, to the man who knows his sin and hates the memory of it, here is the sweetest message of all.  Jesus came to take away sin. 
     What was the meaning of the Saviour’s coming?  Look at I John 3:8.  In this verse we are told that He came to destroy the works of the Devil: “... For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil”.  This Scripture shows we have help, we can be overcomers.  We do not have to be conquered by the evil one.  We can be victorious through faith in Jesus Christ!  The Lord is able to reach down and set a man free from sin and from the penalty of sin, eternal Hell....  
1 Timothy 1:15 explains that our Saviour came to give us life: “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”.  Here is hope for the future!  Why not pray for eternal life right now?
