In July of 1985, we left by faith for Greece with $500 a month pledged support and just seven suit cases for the family (Cheryl, Trish & Matt).  I didn’t know the language, where we would stay or what we would do, but clung to God’s promise, “Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.  Brethren, pray for us” (1 Thess. 5:24,25).  And God is faithful!  In His sovereignty, I met Bro. George Kantartzis, who became my lifelong friend and co-worker. He published a bi-monthly evangelistic Greek newspaper, "THE WINNERS". Bro Georgie invited me to help him while learning the Greek language.  I began helping him because I realized what a great tool the written page was to legally reach the lost Greek people in an objective way.  After a few years the Lord provided a house that had a tobacco barn behind it.   I converted the barn into a print shop and began our ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟ-ΦΩΣ publishing ministry, printing an evangelistic newspaper and literature, which we distributed all throughout Greece.  Everything we do is given out for free and to spread the glorious Gospel of Christ!.  It is a ministry to reach souls, not a business!  God has blessed our feeble efforts through the years with souls consistently coming to the Lord through our evangelistic paper.

The Lord moved us to Georgia where I worked as a carpenter and started attending Tabernacle Baptist church.  Pastor John Hutcheson had special discipleship classes for us as well as strong Bible preaching and teaching.  Eventually I was ordained a deacon in the church. The Lord blessed us beyond measure!  Later, I was building houses, developing a small parcel of land as a contractor while teaching our adult Sunday school class at Lakemont Baptist church, just waiting for Jesus to return! God had given us eight acres of land, with our own private water fall and large pond.   I had just built our 3,200 square foot dream house when the Lord called me into the ministry.   Having surrendered my life to Christ, I battled with the concept of His wanting to use someone like me.    “Then said Jesus to them again,  Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you” (John 20:21).  We forsook all and followed Him...

In 1982, I began attending Piedmont Bible College in Winston-Salem.  At PBC, while learning about ancient Greece I became very intrigued.  My mother, although born in New Jersey, was Greek and spent her childhood in Greece during WWII.  Her parents were both from Greece...  The seed thought inspired me to investigate the Gospel work in Greece and I was astonished.  There is no separation of church and state in Greece, the Greek Orthodox Church is part of the government. They didn’t allow missionaries visas and there was only one Baptist woman there at that time…

Born in Miami, FL I never went to church growing up.  I didn’t believe in God and I mocked Christians.  After moving to Colorado in 1975 my life dramatically changed.  I was arrested for smuggling 1,830 pounds of marijuana; a small plane load from Mexico… Getting arrested was God’s sovereign hand of mercy. The slamming jail cell door causes you to think about life! Thank God for being born in America where I had heard “somewhere” that Jesus was The Way, etc…  Out on bond, I was in my hotel room, at the “end of my rope”, where I dropped to my knees just hours before going to federal court.  I told God that I was going the wrong way and I had heard that Jesus was "The Way", and asked for His forgiveness….   I was unfamiliar with the Bible back then, but I realized the fact that I was a sinner.   I didn’t truly understand “salvation” or Christian terminology at the time, but I knew that the experience had changed my life.  “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Cor. 5:17).

Then in 1999, tragedy struck the Meador family, as Cheryl was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer and we were told her condition was 93% fatal! I thank God that our dear pastor, Bro. Bobby Roberson called me and warmly encouraged me to bring Cheryl back to see some American doctors... We did return briefly to the States so she could do her chemotherapy and surgery....the oncologist here in NC told us the same thing, less than 10% survival rate but he wanted to try a new (at that time) chemotherapy on Cheryl. While on the chemo, we were in a head on car collision and Cheryl's back was broken.  Those were some very dark months, but God was extremely merciful, the new chemo worked and the Lord enabled us to return to Greece! However, after that we had to come back annually for brief, few week medical trips to see her various doctors....

I did not want to move back to America and had no intention of ever doing so, but the Lord kept speaking to my heart about it and convinced me through prayer... I believe the most important issue for any Christian is the WILL OF GOD!

The Lord brought us back November 30th, 2004 and Cheryl had her 1st heart attack on our way to America at the French airport, while connecting in route... She had her 2nd heart attack and a quadruple by-pass on Father’s Day in 2008.  Still suffering chronic chest pains after the surgery we discovered that 3 of her 4 bypasses failed and so they decided to go back and put stints in her original native blocked arteries.  Cheryl suffers still now with chest pains, arrhythmia and tachycardia almost daily because of her condition.  And there is no solution even after multiple procedures...  She uses a nitro spray when needed and various medications. Cheryl has other health issues stemming from her type 1 diabetes for 50 years... But I must say, the Lord has been very gracious to us and we praise Him for His daily portion of grace!

Since our return the Lord’s ministry to the Greeks has expanded more than ever!  From my office in Walkertown I send out FREELY in singles our evangelistic newspapers, ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟ-ΦΩΣ & GOSPEL-LIGHT both domestically and abroad. We send the Gospel of Christ all across the nation of Greece and to Greeks in every State in the U.S.A. And we send it to various Greek individuals in Australia, Canada and Europe as well. All these Greek souls are used through our database files.  We publish Gospel tracts and trifolds in both languages and send them also FREELY along with the evangelistic newspapers in BULK PARCELS to various Greek Gospel workers all around the world.

It’s amazing how the Lord has a way of working things out for His glory.  I’m thankful God allowed us to go to Greece for almost 20 years and yet brought us back, increasing our Gospel outreach from a place where we can be near these great doctors for my wife.

                                                                                                                                               Trying to serve Christ,

                                                                                                                                                    Tom Meador
